Response to the Novel's Ending
The ending of the novel I feel is depressing and sad. The ending proves that Candido and his family were never meant to succeed in The United States. Every time Candido and his family were finally get somewhere, tragedy would strike and they would be left with nothing. Its almost as though Candido was sent signs to go home, but he kept ignoring them. America knew they needed to go home but Candido was so determined that going home wasn't an option. But then there was a little bit of hope, when Candido reaches his hand out to the man that was about to shoot him. He saves him from the rushing water. Maybe the act of kindness will bring him good luck? Candido and his wife could keep trying to succeed in The United States but this may have been the deciding factor. I feel they are going to return to Mexico. America, before the mudslide happened she wanted to return, now that the mudslide happened and she lost her child? She will definitely want to return now.
Quotes
"Didn't they know what was at stake here, didn't they know they weren't in Mexico anymore?" (Boyle 287). This quote could be useful because it shows the racism in this novel. Jack and Delaney were quick to judge who started the fire, just because they were Mexican.
"I want to go home to my mother,..., I want to show her my baby. I can't live like this. You promised my---you promised" (Boyle 303). This quote could be useful because America has given up on her "American Dream". She wants to return home to Mexico because she doesn't see herself living like this anymore.
"This was America and it was a beautiful place, drier and hotter than Tepoztlan in the dry season and colder in the wet, but she felt that there was peace here is only she could find it. Peace and prosperity too" (Boyle 326). This quote could be useful because even though it seems as though America gave up on her dream, she still has a small part of her that still has hope. If only she could find the peace she needed in the United States, she would achieve her American Dream.
